From May to October the southwest monsoon brings waves to Phuket’s west coast and Kata Beach becomes the island’s surf hub. Its gentle waves and sandy bottom are perfect for first steps.
How the lesson works
- Warm-up and technique on the sand: paddling, positioning and popping up.
- Practice in the white water with the instructor pushing your board.
- First standing rides in a gentle break.
- Safety tips on currents and beach flags.
Who it is for
Beginners aged 8+ who can swim, and anyone wanting to improve with coaching. High-volume soft boards are used, which are very stable.
What to bring
Swimwear, rash vest, water-resistant sunscreen and drinking water.
Best time: May to October; June, July and August are the most consistent months. From November to April the sea is usually flat.
Always respect red flags: there can be strong currents during the monsoon.
