Vassiliki Bay, in the south of Lefkada, is a European benchmark for windsurfing. Its secret is a very reliable thermal wind: mornings are gentle and perfect for learning, and from midday it builds and the expert riders arrive.
What the lesson involves
- On-land introduction with a simulator: stance, uphauling the sail and turning.
- In-water practice with beginner kit (wide boards and small sails).
- Instructor in the water or in a support boat.
- Multi-day course option to progress until you sail confidently.
Who it is for
Complete beginners from about 8 years and those who already sail and want to improve (harness, planing, gybing). You must be able to swim. It combines well with a sailing week, as Vassiliki is on the Ionian route.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a rash guard.
- Water-resistant sunscreen.
- Neoprene shoes if you have them (the centre usually lends them).
Best time to go
May to October. June, July and August have the most reliable thermal wind. To learn, book a morning slot; afternoons are for intermediate and advanced riders. The centre also rents kit by the hour to those who already sail.
Included
- Certified instructor
- Beginner board and sail
- Wetsuit and buoyancy aid
- Safety boat
FAQs
Can I learn in one lesson?
In two hours most people sail a few metres; to progress, a multi-day course is recommended.
Is there kitesurfing too?
On Lefkada kiting happens mainly at other beaches such as Milos or Gyra; Vassiliki is a windsurf bay.
What if there is no wind?
Mornings usually have enough breeze; if not, the lesson is rescheduled.
