The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef system. From Airlie Beach, a fast catamaran takes you in about 2 hours to Hardy Reef on the outer reef, where a fixed pontoon is your base for the day.
What the day includes
- Return cruise, passing through the Whitsunday Islands.
- Snorkeling straight from the pontoon, in a marked and supervised area.
- A semi-submarine ride and the underwater observatory, ideal if you would rather stay dry.
- Buffet lunch and time to relax on deck.
Who it is for
Families, non-swimmers and anyone who wants an easy reef day. Divers can add dives.
What to bring
Swimwear, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and seasickness medication if you are prone to it. Snorkel gear and stinger suits are included.
Best time
All year. June to October brings cooler water and often better visibility; November to May is stinger season, with protective suits provided. Marine park environmental fees are included.
Good to know: the pontoon has changing rooms, freshwater showers and shaded areas. Lifeguards watch the water throughout the snorkeling time. If you travel with young children, the semi-submarine is usually their favorite way to see the reef up close.
