Few experiences compare with breathing underwater for the first time on the Great Barrier Reef. On this try scuba dive from Airlie Beach you spend the day on the outer reef and do a guided dive alongside an instructor.
What you do
- Cruise by fast catamaran from Airlie Beach to the outer reef, about two to three hours.
- A safety briefing and practice in shallow water.
- An introductory dive of around 30 minutes at shallow depth, among corals, clownfish, parrotfish and, with luck, sea turtles.
- Free time to snorkel, have lunch and relax.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 12 or over who can swim and wants to try diving without a full course. There is a standard medical questionnaire, and some conditions may require a doctor’s sign-off. It is an ideal add-on before or after your sailing week in the Whitsunday Islands.
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Dive gear, snorkel equipment and a lycra stinger suit are included.
Best time
All year round. From June to October the sea is calmer and visibility is better. From November to May is stinger season, when a lycra suit is worn in the water.
Included
- Full day on the outer reef
- Intro dive with instructor
- Dive and snorkel gear
- Stinger suit
- Lunch
