There is no road between Panama and Colombia, and this sailing trip is the favorite alternative for backpackers and travelers with a love of the sea. You share a sailboat with a small group and captain, spend three days anchoring in San Blas and cross the Caribbean to Cartagena.
How the trip works
- 4×4 transfer to Cartí and boarding the sailboat.
- Three days of islands, snorkeling and fresh fish meals.
- About 30–40 hours of open-sea sailing.
- Arrival in Cartagena and help with entry into Colombia.
Who it is for
Adventurous travelers happy with shared spaces and nights in a bunk. The open-sea leg can be rough: bring medication if you get seasick. No sailing experience needed.
What to bring
- Passport valid for at least 6 months.
- A soft bag, not a hard suitcase.
- Seasickness medication, sunscreen and a head torch.
Best time
December to April has more departures, though trade winds make the crossing livelier; May to July is usually calmer. Departures depend on the weather.
