Sea Kayaking Tour in Stonington, Maine

Paddle with a guide among the granite islands of the Merchant Row archipelago, one of the best sea kayaking areas on the East Coast.

Off Stonington, on Deer Isle, lies a maze of pink-granite islands covered in spruce, many protected or open to the public as part of the Maine Island Trail. It is perfect sea kayaking country: sheltered channels, cobble beaches and plenty of wildlife.

The trip

  • Briefing and basic paddling technique on the beach.
  • Guided route between islands, adapted to wind and tide.
  • Stop on an island to rest and have a snack.
  • Look out for seals, bald eagles, cormorants and sometimes porpoises.

Who it is for

Beginners of average fitness and experienced paddlers wanting a longer route. Stable doubles or singles are used. Suggested minimum age: 10 with an adult.

What to bring

  • Quick-dry clothes (no cotton) and a windproof layer.
  • Sandals or water shoes.
  • Water, hat and sunscreen.

Best time: June to September. Gulf of Maine water is cold all year, so the guide carries safety gear and picks the route by conditions.
