Garifuna Drumming & Cooking Experience, Hopkins

Learn to play Garifuna drums and cook hudut with a local family in Hopkins. A culture recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage.

The Garifuna, descendants of West Africans and Indigenous Caribs, have a language, music and dance recognised by UNESCO. The coastal village of Hopkins, an hour from Placencia, is one of their liveliest cultural centers.

What you do

  • Transfer from Placencia to Hopkins.
  • Drumming lesson with local musicians: punta and paranda rhythms.
  • Traditional cooking workshop: hudut, fish in coconut milk with mashed plantain.
  • Share the meal and talk about Garifuna history, language and traditions.

Who it is for

Curious travelers of all ages, families included. No musical knowledge needed; it is a hands-on and very fun activity.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, cool clothes.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Cash if you want to buy music or crafts.

Best time

All year. Around 19 November, Garifuna Settlement Day, the village is in full celebration.

Good to know

It is a community experience: a large share of the price goes directly to local families and musicians. The menu can be adapted for vegetarians with advance notice. At the end there is usually some punta dancing in which everyone joins in. The experience is in English, with simple explanations and plenty of hands-on moments; children tend to love it.
