Pico do Papagaio, shaped like a parrot’s head, is the second-highest point on Ilha Grande. The hike leaves Vila do Abraão before dawn and climbs through the State Park’s Atlantic Forest by headlamp to reach the summit before sunrise.
What you will do
- A pre-dawn start from Vila do Abraão with a guide.
- A climb of about 3 hours through Atlantic Forest.
- Sunrise from the summit over the bay and mountains.
- Descent in daylight and return to the village.
Who it is for
For fit hikers from around 12 years old. The trail is steep with roots and rocks and must be done with a guide. Access depends on the park keeping the trail open.
What to bring
- Trail shoes and breathable clothing.
- A jacket for the often chilly summit.
- Water, a snack and insect repellent.
Best time to go
April to October, with less rain and clearer skies. In summer heat and storms make the hike harder and cloud can hide the sunrise.
