Barbuda, Antigua’s sister island, is flat, wild and barely populated. It is home to the Codrington Lagoon frigate bird sanctuary, one of the largest magnificent frigatebird colonies in the Caribbean, and some of the most unspoilt beaches anywhere.
The day
- Fast ferry or short flight from Antigua (about 90 minutes by ferry).
- Boat ride across the lagoon with a local guide to the colony: see males with their red throat pouches inflated in courtship season and chicks on nests.
- Beach time at Princess Diana Beach or Pink Sand Beach.
- Local lunch, often lobster, and a visit to Codrington or the Two Foot Bay caves depending on the program.
Who it is for
Nature lovers, photographers and anyone looking for empty beaches. Family friendly.
What to bring
- Binoculars or a telephoto lens.
- Hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Seasickness tablets if you are sensitive: the channel can be rough.
Best time
November to April is frigatebird breeding season, with peak courtship from December to February. In very rough seas the ferry may be cancelled.

Barbuda has very few services, so the guide handles everything.
