Steady trade winds make the BVI a great kitesurfing destination. Lessons run from a boat in deep water near Virgin Gorda, with radio helmets so the instructor can coach you in real time and pick you up if you drift.
How the lesson works
- Theory on wind, safety and kite set-up.
- Kite control and body dragging in the water.
- First board starts as you progress.
- Sessions of 2 hours minimum.
Who it is for
Beginners from about 12 with good swimming ability, and riders wanting to learn to go upwind or jump. It is physical, so reasonable fitness helps. One-to-one or for two people.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a long-sleeve rash guard.
- Water-resistant sunscreen.
- Water and a snack.
Best time
December to July, with the most reliable trade winds from December to March and in June–July. September and October tend to be lighter.
