RMS Rhone Wreck Dive, British Virgin Islands

RMS Rhone Wreck Dive, British Virgin Islands

Dive the Caribbean’s most famous shipwreck, the RMS Rhone (1867), in the Salt Island marine park. Two-tank dive from Tortola.

The RMS Rhone, a British Royal Mail steamer sunk by a hurricane in 1867, lies between 6 and 25 metres off Salt Island. It is the signature dive of the British Virgin Islands and part of the territory’s first national marine park.

The dive

  • Bow and cargo hold at about 20-25 m, with the bowsprit and hull still recognisable.
  • Stern and the famous giant propeller in shallow water, ideal for all levels.
  • Turtles, parrotfish, barracuda, moray eels and coral covering the structure.
  • The second dive is usually on a nearby reef such as Painted Walls or Blonde Rock.

Who it is for

Certified divers (Open Water or higher). Beginners can do a supervised try dive on the shallow stern section with an instructor.

What to bring

  • Certification card and logbook.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a towel.

Best time

Year-round, with the best visibility from December to June. August to October is hurricane season. Do not fly for 18 hours after diving.

Good to know

Dive trips leave in the morning from Road Town or Nanny Cay. If you are sailing with us, the center can pick you up from the park moorings next to your boat. Small groups and an in-water guide. Underwater visibility often exceeds 20 metres, making the wreck easy to explore.

Included

  • Two-tank guided dive
  • Tanks, weights and boat trip
  • Marine park mooring fee
  • Water and fruit on board
