The Gulf of Thailand is one of the world’s most popular places to learn to dive, thanks to warm, calm water full of life. The PADI Open Water course from Koh Samui lets you get certified without moving to another island.
How the course works
- Theory with your instructor or online before you travel.
- Pool skills sessions on Samui.
- Four open-water dives by boat around Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan or the Ang Thong dive sites.
- A PADI certification valid for life to dive to 18 metres.
What you will see
Hard and soft coral reefs, parrotfish, triggerfish, barracuda and, in season and with luck, whale sharks passing near Sail Rock.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 10 or over who can swim. You will complete a standard medical questionnaire and, depending on your answers, may need a medical certificate. If you have already done a try dive, part of the course may be credited.
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and comfortable clothes for the boat. All equipment is included, along with lunch on boat days.
Best time
January to October, with the best visibility from March to September and water at 28–30 °C. In November, during the monsoon, sea conditions can prevent boat trips, so we recommend planning your course earlier or later.
