Every season, from October to April, juvenile whale sharks gather in the shallow waters of the Bay of La Paz to feed on plankton. We leave the marina by panga and reach the viewing area in about 20 minutes. It is a protected zone with strict rules: a limited number of boats, short swimming turns and snorkel only (scuba is not allowed).
How it works
- Safety briefing and interaction rules at the marina.
- Panga ride with captain and bilingual guide.
- Small groups enter the water in turns, keeping a respectful distance.
- Back to port after about 3 hours.
Who it is for
Anyone who can swim and feels comfortable with mask and fins. Children from around 6 years old usually love it wearing a life vest. No previous experience needed.
What to bring
- Swimsuit, towel and a warm layer for the ride back.
- Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard.
- Underwater camera (no flash).
Best time: November to March, when sightings are most frequent. These are wild animals: encounters are very likely but never guaranteed.
