Lopes Mendes is almost 3 km of fine white sand with no buildings, framed by the protected forest of Ilha Grande State Park. There are no roads on the island: you get there on foot or by combining a boat with a short trail. This trip combines the best of both.
The route
- Walk from Vila do Abraão along trail T10 (about 2 h 30 min, moderate).
- Pass Palmas and Pouso beaches, with swim stops.
- Free time at Lopes Mendes to swim and relax.
- Return by boat from Pouso to Abraão.
Along the way the guide explains the Atlantic Forest flora, and marmosets, birds and butterflies are easy to spot.
Who it is for
People of average fitness: there are climbs and descents on trails with roots and rocks. To skip most of the hike, take the boat to Pouso and walk just 20 minutes.
What to bring
- Hiking shoes or trainers with good grip.
- At least 1.5 l of water, snacks and sunscreen.
- Mosquito repellent and swimsuit.
Best time: April to October, with milder temperatures for walking. Lopes Mendes has few facilities, so bring what you need.
