Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the world’s aquarium, and La Paz is one of the best places to learn to dive in it. The PADI Open Water course in La Paz gives you the world’s most recognised qualification to dive independently to 18 metres.
How the course works
- Theory with your instructor or online before you arrive.
- Skills practice in confined water.
- Four open-water dives on reefs near La Paz and Espíritu Santo island.
- A PADI certification valid for life.
What you will see
Schools of fish, angelfish, moray eels, rays and, with luck, playful sea lions. Once certified you can dive sites such as Los Islotes or the Salvatierra wreck.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 10 or over who can swim. You will complete a standard medical questionnaire and, depending on your answers, may need a note from your doctor. It is a great way to use the days before or after your sailing week.
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. All dive equipment is included.
Best time
All year round. From June to November the water is 26–29 °C with the best visibility; in winter it is cooler (around 21 °C) and a thicker wetsuit is used, though the diving is still excellent.
