Between March and June, in the days around the full moon, large aggregations of snapper spawn at Gladden Spit, on the outer edge of the barrier reef. Whale sharks come to feed on the eggs, and Placencia is the closest departure port. The reserve is regulated: limited boats, licensed guides and fixed time slots.
The trip
- Early departure by fast boat (about 1 h 15 min).
- Search for whale sharks in blue water, snorkelling or diving depending on your option.
- Lunch and snorkel at a cay such as the Silk Cayes.

Important: sightings depend on nature and are not guaranteed. Dates are set each year by the lunar calendar; book early as spaces are limited.
