The Papuan communities of Raja Ampat are the archipelago’s guardians: many reef areas are managed under traditional closure rules called sasi. On this visit you get to know two villages in the Waigeo and Dampier Strait area, Friwen and Yenbeser.
What you will do
- Guided walk through the village and along its jetty.
- Talk on traditional fishing, sasi and marine conservation.
- Demonstration of local crafts such as pandanus-leaf weaving.
- Time to buy crafts directly from families.
Who it is for
Travellers who want to understand local culture and support communities directly. A gentle activity suitable for all ages.
What to bring
Clothes covering shoulders and knees out of respect, sandals, water and some cash in rupiah. Ask permission before photographing people.
Best time: all year. On Sundays many families attend church, so another day is better.
