A kayak is the quietest and most respectful way to explore Raja Ampat. From the coast of Waigeo or the Dampier Strait islands, you paddle past jungle-clad limestone walls, slip into mangrove channels and stop over reefs so shallow you can see the corals from the surface.
What you will do
- Technique and safety briefing.
- A guided route of about three hours among islets and mangroves.
- Snorkel stops on shallow reefs.
- Birdwatching: hornbills, sea eagles and parrots.
Who it is for
Anyone with normal fitness, no experience required. Stable double kayaks are used. Ideal for families with children over 8.
What to bring
Swimwear, a long-sleeved top, cap, reef-safe sunscreen, water and a dry bag. An early start is recommended to avoid the midday heat.
Best time: October to April, with calmer seas and less wind.
