Tongan Feast: Umu Banquet & Dance Show

A traditional dinner cooked in an earth oven (umu) on a Vava’u beach, with Tongan dance and music. The island’s most authentic cultural experience.

The umu is Tonga’s traditional earth oven: pork, fish, chicken, yam, taro and lu (taro leaves in coconut cream) cook for hours under hot stones and banana leaves. At this feast in a beachside village you share the table with a local family and enjoy a show of traditional dance.

How the evening works

  • Transfer from Neiafu to the village in the late afternoon.
  • Welcome and an explanation of how the umu is prepared.
  • Traditional banquet served on leaf-lined tables.
  • Dances such as the tau’olunga and live music.

Who it is for

Travellers of all ages interested in Polynesian culture. Vegetarian options are available with advance notice. It is customary to offer a small tip to the dancers during the tau’olunga.

What to bring

  • Clothes covering shoulders and knees.
  • Mosquito repellent.
  • Cash for tips and crafts.
