Hiking Stromboli is one of the most special mountain experiences in Italy. For safety, access to the volcano is regulated by local ordinance: hikes are only allowed with authorised guides and up to the maximum altitude permitted at the time (in recent seasons, around 400 metres). The 924 m summit has been closed to the public since 2019.
What to expect
- Meet in Stromboli village in the late afternoon and receive your helmet.
- Climb on a path of volcanic sand and scrub, with stops to learn about the volcano.
- Sunset views over Strombolicchio and, depending on activity, glows from the crater.
- Descent by headlamp.
Who it is for
People with average fitness, from age 10-12 depending on the guide. It is not technical, but it is steep with loose sand.
What to bring
- Hiking shoes, water (1.5 l), headlamp and a jacket.
- A scarf or mask against volcanic dust.
Best time
May, June, September and October are the most pleasant months. In July and August the hike starts later to avoid the heat. Authorities may close access depending on the alert level, in which case you get a refund.
