Naxos is the most fertile island in the Cyclades: potatoes, PDO cheeses (graviera, arseniko), olive oil and citrus. In this cooking class you visit a family farm inland, near villages such as Melanes, and cook with whatever the land offers that day.
What you do
- Walk through the garden and pick seasonal ingredients.
- Prepare 3-4 dishes: cheese or vegetable pie, tzatziki, keftedes or an island stew.
- Use a wood-fired oven where the farm has one.
- Long lunch in the shade with local wine or raki.
Who it is for
Food lovers, families and couples. No cooking skills required. Mention allergies or vegetarian diets when booking; most menus can be adapted.
What to bring
- Comfortable clothes and closed shoes for the garden.
- Hat and water in the hot months.
- An appetite: you will eat a lot.
Best time
May to October. In spring the garden is at its greenest; September brings the grape and fig harvest. A great plan for a day of strong meltemi, when the sea is less inviting.
Good to know
At the end you receive the recipes so you can repeat them at home. Classes start mid-morning or late afternoon depending on the day, and groups are small so everyone gets hands-on.
Included
- Farm and garden visit
- Cooking class with local hosts
- Full meal of what you cook
- Wine, raki and water
